Oliver Layton

Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Computer Science, Colby College

Oliver Layton is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Computer Science at Colby College. He teaches courses related to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, including Data Analysis and Visualization, Neural Networks, Deep Learning, Computational Neuroscience, and Bio-Inspired Machine Learning. Oliver’s research focuses on the interplay between AI and neuroscience—exploring how the brain can inform the design of better bio-inspired algorithms and how AI can, in turn, help us understand brain function. A primary area of focus is improving our understanding of how humans use vision to navigate through dynamic and complex environments. Through his lab, OWLab, Oliver and his students conduct research with human participants to understand perception and action during navigation, using those findings to inform the development of AI models. Oliver earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive and Neural Systems from Boston University and B.A.s in Computational Neuroscience and Mathematics from Skidmore College.
